On Shrooms: Yes I Put Mushrooms In My Coffee & You Should Too!

I know you read that title and thought, "That title must be a mistake!" Well, I ain’t lyin! I love drinking my "shroom coffee," as my hubby & I call it, every single day and enjoy the wonderful benefits of other mushrooms in my smoothies, hot chocolate and even baking. No, I am not putting portobello or shiitake in my cashew milk lattes.

These aren’t the same types of mushrooms you would order on your pizza. These are medicinal mushrooms. WAIT! It’s not what you think. These aren’t the kind of “shrooms” that make you hallucinate or do strange things. These are legit, functional mushrooms, superfoods and adaptogens, that boost your immune system, help with stress, sleep, energy, brain health and more.

Adaptogens are herbal substances that are used to improve your health and aid in helping the body to “adapt” to what it needs. They boost the immune system, support healthy weight, increase mental focus, encourage a happy and healthy mood, aid in reducing stress and more.

We know that blueberries, acai and pomegranates are known as high antioxidant fruits, and that we should incorporate more antioxidants into our diets on a daily basis. Antioxidants can protect your cells against the effects of free radicals which play a role in cancer and other diseases. “Scientists developed something called an ORAC scale, which is a standard recommended by USDA to measure antioxidant capacity. ORAC is the strength with which a given substance wipes out free radicals. Obviously, the higher the ORAC score, the more free radicals that certain substance can destroy.

Chaga scored 6.5 times higher than acai, 10.5 times higher than pomegranate and 46 times higher than blueberries! This means that Chaga is much higher in antioxidants than the fruits that are perceived to be high antioxidants and that Chaga's capacity to wipe out free radicals is much stronger than any other. All of that info should encourage you to add Chaga, as well as other mushrooms, to your daily routine. I enjoy adding a packet of Chaga to some hot homemade cashew milk with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides and sometimes I add a little honey or maple syrup to sweeten.
